7 Critical Decisions When Choosing Custom Food Packaging

The right package does more than look good: it protects the food, improves operations and puts the brand directly into the customer’s hands.

Published

Small decisions made for a burger box, paper cup or carrier bag influence the entire journey—from service speed and food temperature to inventory cost and brand perception. Custom packaging should therefore be treated not only as a design project, but as an extension of the product and the operation.

01

1. Start with the food itself

The first question should not be “How should it look?” but “What will it hold?” Temperature, weight, oil and sauce content, holding time and delivery method define the package’s basic structure.

Even two products of the same size can need different solutions. Ventilation matters for crispy chicken, while leak resistance matters more for saucy food. The longer the delivery journey, the more important this distinction becomes.

  • Actual product dimensions and portion weight
  • Hot, cold, greasy or saucy use
  • Delivery and holding time
  • How the product is carried by hand, bag and vehicle

2. Choose material for its job, not only its look

Board colour and finish shape the brand language, but the material’s first task is to carry food safely. Smooth boards support detailed printing, while suitable barrier structures help products that need more resistance to moisture or grease.

A kraft appearance is not right for every brand, just as a glossy surface is not enough for every product. Food-contact suitability, print result, folding strength and real use conditions must be considered together.

03

3. Size the package for the whole delivery chain

Sizing does not end when the product fits inside. Consider how the box is assembled at the counter, stacked, placed inside a carrier bag and stored before use.

An oversized box increases material and shipping volume; an undersized one compresses the food and harms presentation. The best size protects the product and fits the daily workflow.

04

4. Design for print and folding reality

A design that looks strong on screen can lose impact when cut and fold lines are ignored. A logo may land on a closure, small text may disappear into a crease, and colour transitions may change across surfaces.

Bleed, safe areas, glue panels, readable type sizes and colour standards should be set before production so the identity stays coherent after the box is assembled.

05

5. Balance minimum order quantity with stock rhythm

Higher custom-production quantities often improve unit economics, but chasing only the lowest unit price can create excessive stock and storage pressure.

The right order quantity combines daily use, campaign periods, storage capacity, expected growth and reproduction time. The goal is to prevent shortages without leaving cash on the shelf for too long.

06

6. Make approvals visual and written

Before production, dimensions, material, colours, copy, quantity and delivery details should be confirmed in one clear approval flow. Phone numbers, social handles, ingredient information and QR codes deserve a final check.

Keeping the approved artwork on record gives both brand and manufacturer a safe reference and helps repeat orders maintain the same standard.

07

7. Evaluate suppliers beyond unit price

Packaging is one of the first physical surfaces through which customers experience a brand. Compare material standards, print consistency, delivery discipline, communication, shipping preparation and problem resolution—not only unit price.

The right production partner treats packaging as a repeatable brand system, not merely an item to be delivered.

A short pre-order checklist

Preparing these details before requesting a quotation speeds up the process and supports more accurate pricing.

  • Product type and approximate dimensions
  • Order quantity and monthly use
  • Preferred material or performance requirement
  • Print colours and a usable logo file
  • Destination country, city and target date
